on one’s father’s/mother’s side

sideは「側、方」という意味がありますが、fatherやmotherを組みわせて使うことで、on one’s father’s ＝「父親の方の（父方の）」、on one’s mother’s＝「母親の方の（母方の）」を表します。

on one’s father’s[mother’s] side of the familyが正式な表現ですが、会話では省略して、on one’s father’s[mother’s] sideだけで表すことが多いようです。
